A Short Story.

A middle aged man walked into his dining room early on a Sunday morning. He knew that he was due at the church in a little over an hour. Still, he decided to sit and have a nip of whiskey and enjoy one more cigarette before going and helping people govern their lives with the immutable word of the Lord.
After downing the whiskey with much haste, he put the brown spotted filter of the cigarette into his still burning mouth. He thought to himself, if only his congregation knew that this is one of the few great pleasures in life. Every Sunday, this pious phony told his followers that their bodies were temples that God built with his bare hands to house their souls until the judgment day.
On his way out the door, the preacher had a bit of a coughing fit, nothing out of the ordinary he thought, until he looked down at his fifty-dollar silk handkerchief that God helped him buy. On it, he saw four or five sizable blotches of blood. He had made a pact with God himself though, so instead of driving a block away to the hospital, he made the three-quarters of an hour trek to the multi-million dollar, state of the art Jesus Christ Celebration Center that God himself had commissioned.
He straightened his two-hundred dollar tie in his rear view mirror before getting out of his brand new sports car that God cosigned on for him. He hadn't made it two steps towards the solid gold door before he began to get unbearably dizzy. He told himself that was just the five-hundred dollar aged whiskey that God had gotten him for his birthday doing it's job. He made it exactly six more steps before losing consciousness and crumbling onto the asphalt.
He awoke several hours later in the hospital that was named after him after he made a quite large, quite well publicized donation. The doctor told him when he came to that he had inoperable lung cancer, and he had two weeks to live.
The preacher prayed to God every night to cure his incurable ailment. He told God that he wasn't ready to die, he didn't have all of his affairs in order. The following Sunday, the preacher's condition wasn't any better. He begged and begged the doctor to let him go to church one last time before he died. The doctor even called a limousine for the sickly old codger.
The preacher walked slowly up the aisle when he reached his destination. When he got to the lectern, he pulled a cigarette out of his pocket, and lit it much to the chagrin of his congregation. Still, nobody stopped him as he uncorked the communal wine and took a nice healthy swig. He told his flock that their money had afforded him a great deal of opportunities, and for that he was thankful. He also told them that he expected to see hell first hand very soon, but first he wanted to tell them to enjoy a good glass of whiskey and a cigarette whenever the situation allowed it. His last words were, "Praise him who allows us all this excess."
Then God spoke to the preacher with a glass of whiskey at his side and a cigarette clenched firmly between his first and middle fingers. He gave the preacher a firm pat on the back and said that he was proud of him. The preacher was the first man who had ever lived up to Gods expectations. And after a life of lying and stealing, the preacher shared a finely aged whiskey and a pack of smokes with his Almighty Savior.

okay, maybe an overreaction, but it seems like every time i tell someone i like this album, they freak out. i might even be so bold as to say this is tied with through being cool for my favorite std album.(std lol)

Cursive - Domestica

domestica is the third full-length from nebraska emo-rockers cursive. if you take offense to me calling cursive an emo band, you really don't know your stuff. however, this was before emo went to shit. this album is jammed with songs about heartbreak reflecting leading man tim kasher's real life divorce. there is a small chance that this is buried under your copy of the ugly organ, but you should really give this album a spin, i think you'll like what you find.

manual zombie - autumn

okay, this isn't usually an avenue of music that i liesurely stroll down, but this is was a submission, so the least i can do is give it the old college drop-out try.

there are three things that stick out to me on this release. one is the sampling, which is top notch, if you're into that sort of thing. the different samples definitely fit in with the music. the vocals find themselves on the low end, sometimes blending in and almost becoming the bass line. this band uses a drum machine, but it's not nearly as corny as it could be.

there are some negatives to this release though. at times, the music plays back seat to the
sampling and groans from the vocalist. there's also a fuzz on the recording. the entire thing. i'm guessing this was done on purpose, so i can't really fault them for it.

my favorite song from autumn is susannah, which starts out with a comparatively mellow riff, and over four minutes turns into a cacophony of sound. it's almost as if there's a sonic wall being built right in front of me and then crashes down at the final moments... followed by a sample from dirty harry.

this is why i'm glad i started this blog though. it's given me a chance to hear all kinds of music i
wouldn't have had the chance to otherwise. also, keep sending me your music, i love listening to new stuff.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lie Down in the Light

Will Oldham has been putting out music for decades now under several different aliases (Palace, Palace Brothers, Will Oldham, and most importantly, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy).

This is, in my opinion, his best album to date. Along with a backing cast that includes his brother Paul, Will sings through twelve tracks of beautiful alt-country classics. Normally, I'm more of a folk-punk guy, but Oldham really brings together all of the best elements of alt-country together to make one gem of an album.

I've decided to start doing an out of ten ratings system, just to classify my particular tastes in music a little easier. So without further ado, Lie Down in the Light gets:

Kimya Dawson - Hidden Vagenda

Sorry about the gaps between my posts. I haven't really had a ton of motivation to do this for a few days, but I'm pretty sure I've got a few albums lined up and ready to go.

On today's agenda, Kimya Dawson. You probably know her as the female voice from that cutesy song in Juno. I'm not saying it wasn't a good song, and she had a couple of other songs in that movie that were really good, but it's far from the best song she's ever written. In fact every single song on this album is worlds better than that song.

My entire life I've never really enjoyed female vocalists. I think it's because of all the embellishments that they throw in with their music. Take someone like Brittney Spears; really take her. guh guh guh. Anyways, for a female to be considered a good singer, you have to be perfect. And in a world of perfect female voices, Kimya Dawson's voice rings through strongest of all. I call her the female Daniel Johnston, and I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be offended.

This Bike is a Pipe Bomb - Front Seat Solidarity

I just recently discovered the record label, Plan-it-X. I truly wish I would have found it earlier. I'm half determined to make this Plan-It-X week here on Medium Fidelity, but I'm not sure how many albums I'll be able to find. We shall see.
Anyways, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb was formed in 1997, they're a folk punk band from Pensacola, Florida, and they rock hard. I'm seeing a lot more punk infused than folk in this particular record, but I think I like it better that way.
There are a lot of different sounds in this record. Some songs shift from surfer rock to folk to straight up punk all in a few minutes. The easiest way to describe this band is, "They're awesome."
What makes them even more awesome is their name. Multiple times the bomb squad has been called to dissemble a bomb when someone slapped one of this bands stickers on their bicycle. Hilarious.

On to the more pressing matter. Paul Baribeau is a genius. His music is magnificent, his lyrics are both personal and personable, and we are lucky to be alive in the same time period as such a great human being.

i just recently watched once again. if you don't know anything about once, it's basically a love story/musical. set in dublin. starring glen hansard of the frames and marketa irglova. revolving around a vacuum cleaner repairman and a street saleswoman.
if i heard that, i'm not so positive that i'd want to watch the movie, actually, but this movie is precious. there really is no better word for it. the parts are all expertly performed, and the music is magnificent.

The Smith Westerns are from Chicago, and as far as we can tell are either named after a tourist trinket manufacturer in Tacoma or a chain of honkytonk restaurants in south England. Maybe both. Imagine being on family vacation somewhere kind of corny and sucky but running into a girl or boy who is also on family vacation in the same corny, sucky place. You guys buy each other pins from the gift shop at the foot of a rollercoaster, maybe they’re little cowboy hats. You throw some skeeball. Then you go back to your hometowns and write each other crazy letters for the rest of the summer while listening to Marc Bolan. That’s what this song sounds like. So maybe they know what they’re doing with the name. Regardless, this shit is so good we had to learn all the words just so we could yell it at grumpy snitches on the subway.

1. he abbreviates his name lil' wayne. i just hate the abbreviation lil'
2. he thinks he's going to be a rock star.
3. he uses autotune.

but i'll forgive him because the carter 3 is a great hip hop album. his voice is one of the most unique i've heard as far as a rapper, and his flow is amazing. sure this is a really mainstream release, but you definitely need to add it to your collection.

the very first iron and wine song that i ever heardwas probably the same one you heard. "such great heights" was one of the most striking singles i've ever listened to. the first time i heard it, it was on a m&m's commercial,and i actually looked the song up online. it isn't often that you hear a song on television, and in a brief 30 seconds fall in love. anyways, i don't want this to turn into a love letter to sam beam, the musician behind iron and wine. all you really need to know is this is easily the greatest album of its kind, which is lo-fi, acoustic/folky music. please if you've never heard it download it and give it a chance.

I really really really hate the term freak-folk. If these records were released at any point in history, they would just be called folk. Our genre-obsessed culture has gone a little overboard, and the result is "freak-folk". What it really is is a bunch of dudes that want to take a little lsd and make good music. If you wanna call it anything, try new folk or folk. I call it awesome and this is one of my favorite new folk albums. Well, it was actually released in 2006, but I'm not going to argue semantics. Really good music.

I would love to say that this was what I was listening to in 2001, but it would be a humongous lie. Thank god for the advent of the internet, music blogs, and wikipedia. See, Wikipedia is how I find most of my music. I move from page to page with cat-like reflexes, looking for anything that would whet my appetite for new music.
I think I found this album around 3 years ago, and it completely changed the type of music that I listened to (which at the time was shitty radio rock and pop music. I am thoroughly ashamed.)
Anyways, you desperately need this album. Download it and listen to it every single day for the rest of your life. I know I've listened to it at least once a week since I found it.

The immortal Elliott Smith's band before going solo was Heatmiser. You'll definitely recognize his voice and his lyrics, but otherwise it has a much more pop/rock dynamic.

Man, it's been a while since I've posted on here. I actually forgot that I had this, hah. Thanks to Francisco for commenting on my picture, blogspot sent me an email which reminded me. So I have a lot of ground to make up.

I've actually been sleeping on this album for a while. I mean literally sleeping on it. Like every time I put it on, it puts me to sleep. It is by no means a boring album, just quiet (even for me). But I love Phil Elvrum, so I decided to put his most recent effort up.

if you are even remotely a fan of devendra banhart, then this cd is most definitely for you. very psychedelic album, made even more so by greg rogove of the priestbirds. met with very poor critical reviews, but i think this album may have been made this way on purpose. you'll understand once you download and listen to it i'm sure.

if i had to describe this music i would call it lit-rock. these guys are hyper literate and they let it show. david berman leads this project, and his voice is definitely... unique. it may take a while to get used to, actually, but it's one of the things that make this cd great.
